Don’t Trust Your Partner

I watched a game recently and A1 took a 3 pointer from the corner. The lead official stepped out to cover the shooter and stayed with the play until the shooter returned to the floor. The trail official stepped in anticipating the long rebound and subsequently called a push in the back on B2. In between the shot and the foul call, the ball hit the rim and bounced up in the air and appeared to touch a support wire.

The crew awarded the ball to Team A on the baseline for the throw in and the game continued. I chatted with the guys at halftime and asked whether either of them had seen the ball hit the support wire on the shot in the 1st quarter. Nobody’s perfect. That’s why you have a partner. Make yourself better. Make your partner perfect.

Be mindful of those spots where hyper vigilance may be necessary. i.e., two players that have been going at it who suddenly fall behind a play. Someone may be about to throw a punch. Or a quick play on the side line, when players turn their backs, and the ball goes out of bounds. Did you anticipate and position yourself to get a good angle and make the right call? Maybe your partner had a better look? Did you look to your partner for help? We all need help sometimes. The crowd on that side probably knows who touched it last. Don’t guess and hurt your credibility.

Moral: Don’t Trust Your Partner (to be perfect}. Be prepared to cover anything and everything that may happen in a game.
